PROGRAM
The Rochefort ridge is an excellent step towards tackling the top-level mountaineering routes. The ascent requires good technical skills, both on rock and on ice. There are climbing stretches up to grade III+ at heights between 3,900 and 4,000 metres, which will be covered with crampons on excellent granite and on ice or snow-covered slopes up to 50°-60°. The most experienced mountaineers may combine this ascent with the Dent du Géant.
GROUP DEPARTURES
Difference in altitude: 650 m
Ascent/descent time: 8-10 hours
Meeting point: Skyway cable car ticket office in Entrèves (Courmayeur) for equipment check and a short briefing with the Guide
We’ll take the amazing Skyway Mont Blanc cable car. From the Géant Glacier we’ll head towards the Dent du Géant and climb up its famous “gums” (max. 60°-III). In about 2 hours we’ll reach the base of the Dent (3,880 m), and begin traversing the ridge while admiring the renowned and elegant “meringue” – one of the most photographed landscapes of the Mont Blanc massif.
The first length is a sharp crest of ice and snow leading, after a small rocky stretch to a short but steep descent, approachable, given the right conditions, even with rappelling. The ridge continues on rock and snow, with ups and downs until the base of the Aiguille du Rochefort. An easy climb (max. difficulty III+) will lead us to the summit (4,001 m).
The descent is on the same route as the ascent.
