Icefalls climbing involves using technical ice axes and crampons, plus special security gear that makes climbing ice formation safer.
With ice, technical difficulties are quite changeable: factors to consider, in addition to the type of ice formation, are the weather conditions at the time of climbing and in previous days, and the number of repeats prior to your climb. An ice climbing enthusiast should always be aware of being in a winter Alpine environment.
On top of being a good climber, you must be able to assess the quality of the ice, conditions during approach and descent, in order to be safe and competent.
