Glacier rescue techniques


This course will teach you the most effective glacier rescue techniques, to increase your confidence when travelling on a glacier.

PROGRAM

During the course, we will cover the following topics:

  • how to react in case of a fall: simulations of possible risk situations
  • construction of snow anchors: how to built them by using the technical gear
  • practical demonstrations of how to build different pulley systems for a crevasse rescue
  • practical demonstration of an arrested fall by correct use of the ice axe
  • practical test on building a Mariner pulley system – final test for the client

DAY

Meeting point: Skyway Mont Blanc ticket desk – 8:00-8:30 am (to be confirmed by the Guide)

  • meeting with the Guide
  • short briefing to check the equipment, before collecting the lifts tickets at the desk
  • lifts up by the cable car till Punta Helbronner (3,466 m).
  • short panoramic on the equipment: check of the essential gear to have in the backpack during all the trips that take place on a glacier with crevasses and risks typical of the glacier environmental.
  • easy hike on the glacier, and approach to a place suitable for teaching, testing holds and make some practices and simulation of a crevasse rescue.

Note: In spring, we will use mountaineering equipment during the course.

RATES

610 € fee per person with 1 participant
380 € fee per person with 2 participants

The rate includes
  • the assistance of a UIAGM/IFMGA certified Mountain Guide
  • liability insurance
  • safety gear used by the Guide (eg rope)
  • tickets for lift facilities
  • booking assistance service (including assistance for refuges and lifts reservation)
  • the Mountain Guide’s expenses (lifts, transfers and meals)

The rate does not include
  • research and rescue insurance with UVGAM coverage (recommended): €5 per person for 3 days
  • the hiring of any personal equipment (harness, ice axe, crampons and helmet): €30/day per person while supplies last
  • transfer to/from the meeting point
  • anything that is not mentioned under "The rate includes"

  • It is crucial that participants follow all instructions provided by the mountain guides before and during the activities, and that they accept any changes made to the programme in order to guarantee their safety.
  • Fees for lift facilities, transfers and mountain lodges are subject to changes established and applied by the respective owners without any liability attributable to PEAKSHUNTER Mountain Guides.
  • The rates listed in the “The rate does not include” section are to be considered merely indicative and are therefore subject to changes.
  • PEAKSHUNTER Mountain Guides reserves the right to change any route or activity programme based on conditions (weather, accessibility, refuge) and participants’ fitness level.
  • The dates indicated for the activities may change due to weather, snow, or soil conditions, etc. In addition, they depend on the date of opening/closing of the lift facilities, which are established seasonally/yearly by the managing entities of the same and, therefore, are not in any way attributable to PEAKSHUNTER Mountain Guides.
